Dawn

Dawn

In the setting of Dawn’s story. Gargoyles were once noble protectors of the kingdoms. They stood watch over the cities in the form of statues, warding away demons and monsters that would seek to harm the people they guarded. Years passed and the spirits grew wise to new ways to rid of the Gargoyles that deflected them. In the light of day, the spirits possessed the town’s people and used them to sway the minds of the others. They told lies of the Gargoyles being terrible monsters that preyed on lost children and pets. In time, the idea was adopted and the people turned against their former protectors.

When I made the plan to design a demon hunter, the idea of a bat first came to mind. Something that kept to the shadows at night. Over time, however, I remembered a statue of a Gargoyle my parents had at my old home. The purpose of Gargoyles in older times was to ward off evil spirits as they perched on churches and buildings. It was from this recollection that I decided my demon slayer was certain to be a Gargoyle.

The species itself didn’t grant me much of a direction as the term, Gargoyle is is more of the stone creatures than any kind of species design. Still, we commonly associate them with bat-like wings and monstrous forms. When designing Dawn, I gave her the wings of a bat or dragon, the face of an owl, the hands and feet of a bear and a long thick tail with a tuff of fur like a lion. This combination created a design with a stout and strong build.
