While most stories draw a clear line between good and evil, moral and immoral, there is a place for those that blur that line. A story where the stapled bad guys are not so bad, and the good guys are not always so good. Society often idolizes the cruel and undeserving, unwilling to see the cracks in the public facade. The story of Blood Money and Olivia specifically, is the story of those who lash out against that world. People branded as criminals by the world that made them victims. Few examples society’s victims are as grim as the harm of a child.
Olivia spent her childhood in the shackles of abuse. Broken down by those the world put on a pedestal. When it seemed the light only hurt her, it was darkness that comforted her. Olivia was rescued by a rival cartel to her captors and raised as a daughter to their boss. An older man who lost his daughter long ago, taking care of Olivia to fill the wound in his heart. The little girl was not alone in her own skin, however. A demon by the name of Malice festered, feeding on the fear and hate the little girl felt towards everyone who harmed her before. It fed her rage and in turn, she would feed her demon her enemies.
Olivia became her father’s second in command, but she was a loose canon at times. Should she discover the whereabouts of anyone she remembers from her early life, she will drop any mission in pursuit of them. Despite this behavior harming his business, he often gives his daughter a mild scolding for her actions, if he gives one at all.
DESIGN
When designing Olivia, I chose to make her a Fennec Fox. By using a creature so small, fragile, and often adorable, I created a vast contrast between what she is and what she does. I took a harmless little fox and turned her into most feared assassin in the story. Just like society taking the innocent and helpless, beating them down at every opportunity as the world moves on without them. Olivia is a tale of a victim who lashes out, creating her own brutal idea of justice where society refused to enforce it.
Malice’s design was made to look unatural. Like a creature who doesn’t belong in the world she inhabits. Her form is true black with bright, aggressive shades of red that embody her energy and rage. When she takes over Olivia’s form, she resembles the visage of a fox, but twisted into a vial nightmare. Malice is Olivia’s pain and anger manifested into a weapon to, in her mind, right the wrongs she was dealt.
